This is the fifth in a series of lists I'm publishing providing, in my opinion, the best 40 books (or trilogies/series) of each genre of fiction. The genres include historical fiction, horror, children's literature, science fiction, young adult, thrillers, crime/spy fiction, family sagas, ecofiction, war, dystopian literature, humour/comedic fiction, fantasy, epics, literary fiction, satire, LGBTQ+ literature, adventure/westerns, romance & sex and magical realism.
This list provides what I consider to be the best 40 novels about war (although I snuck a couple in that may stretch the term 'fiction'). They range from literary triumphs of the brutal reality of war to satirical novels involving zombies or bugs from another planet. Nevertheless, they each capture the essence of the tragedy of war, the bittersweet nature of so-called victory and the all-too-human flaws that will always lead to wars. I hope you enjoy my list, as always.
