The Bibliophile's Best Books of Each Genre: Historical Fiction

This is the first in a series of lists I'm developing, with each list providing, in my opinion, the best 40 books (or trilogies/series) of each genre of fiction. The genres include historical fiction, satire, literary fiction, science fiction, young adult, thrillers, crime/spy fiction, family sagas, ecofiction, war, dystopian literature, humour/comedic fiction, fantasy, epics, children's literature, horror, LGBTQ+ literature, adventure/westerns, romance & sex and magical realism.
My first list provides what I believe to be the best historical fiction books of all time. They of course vary in eras of history written about - some go as far back as when humans didn't exist while others are set only a few decades prior. As a lover of both literature and fiction, these books are the best of both worlds. I hope you enjoy this list and my upcoming lists in this series!
