Rabbits and Hares of North America

The mammalian order Lagomorpha consists of two families: the Ochotonidae (pikas) and the better-known Leporidae (rabbits and hares). The USA and Canada have two species of pikas (the widespread American and the Alaska specialty Collared Pika), and 17 species of rabbits and hares; among the latter group, the Alaska Hare was recently consolidated with the Arctic Hare, while the Manzano Mountains and Davis Mountains Cottontails (found in the mountains of New Mexico and Texas) were recently split from the Eastern Cottontail.
