Paul Taylor is a contributor to The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: Science Fiction, edited by Phil Hardy, The Overlook Press, 1995. He listed the films in alphabetical order, calling them "ten not-quite-arbitrary eviocations of pleasure form a genre I still can't define of even always recognize." The Parasite Murders stands in for all Cronenberg.
He notes some embarrassment that all are American except Mad Max 2. He notes the three British films in his comments, thinks Welt Am Drahlt (the only mention of it, widely unavailable until 2011, in the book) or "a vintage Fritz Lang" without getting specific would work for Germany; similarly, he mentions John Sayles for creature features, and "marginal sci-fi horror from Larry Cohen or George Romero," drops Heartbeeps as "a plainly daft personal indulgence," and ponders on whether Eraserhead is science fiction, saying to make it his #11 if it counts. "Only one film sneaks in for primarily extra-cinematic resonances." Which is anybody's guess.
