Nigel Floyd: Ten Best Science Fiction Films

Nigel Floyd is a critic and broadcaster with the BBC. This list appears on page 498 of The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: Science Fiction, editred by Phil Hardy, The Oveerlook Press, 1995. He lists the films in alphabetical order and describes his choices as "obvious." He also comments that he prefers Aliens to Alien, which he describes as "predictable killing-by-numbers." Despite including them, he dismisses both Blade Runner and The Man Who Fell to Earth as "incoherent." Not only that, he considers Blade Runner a travesty of its Philip K. Dick source novel, but credits it with having reinvented the look of modern science fiction film. The Man Who Fell to Earth he considers "visually and intellectually dazzling [...] one of the few 'serious' Science Fiction [his capitals] pictures of recent years to have stood the test of time."
