Richard Combs: Ten Best Horror Films

Richard Combs is an editor and lecturer in film, and at the time editor of The Monthly Film Bulletin. The list is derived from page 397 of The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies edited by Phil Hardy (Harper & Row, 1985). He describes this as a "compromised list" in alphabetical order (starting with "Dance of the Vampires") of the best examples of the horrific in film. At the end he notes several films he considers horrific that are clearly outside the genre of the horror film. He considers The Stalking Moon (a Western) and Klute (a private eye film) to have essentially the same story as Halloween, describes Sam Pekinpah's films made outside America as "Conradian horror," and calls D. W. Griffith's Dream Street "what passes for a Christian allegory of good and evil." He dismisses Dracula and Frankenstein as "figures of fun."
