Many would say his greatest performance was as Richard Harris, professional boozer, brawler, and Irishman. Yet, underneath the hell raising and self-destruction, was a gifted actor who, in the right hands, could give powerful, moving performances. After a long drought in the 1970s and 80s where he did mediocre work in mediocre movies, Harris got his demons under control and had the redemption of the last phase of his career, culminating in his much loved performances In "The Field", and especially as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter franchise, which he played right up until his death.
