Davie Pirie: Top Ten Horror Films

Dave Pirie is a screenwriter, novelist, and critic, and the author of A Heritage of Horror, a classic account of British horror cinema. His list, which appears on pages 398 of The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies edited by Phil Hardy (Harper & Row, 1985) is skewed toward fifties and sixties films but admits that Brian De Palma's Carrie was a close contendor. He vehemently defends his inclusion of A Nightmare on Elm Street, calling Wes Craven "quite the most tenacious and consistent of the last wave of horror movie makers.... Nightmare manages to move that whole dreary subgenre [teenage massacre] on light years by its use of dreams, and raises high hopes that Craven could yet be the most important exponent of horror since [Roman] Polanski."
