Rough Guide to Children's Books:Ages 5-11 - Page 3

All titles are from Nicholas Tucker's above-titled book. Books #1-51 are for ages 5-7, books #52-106 are for ages 7-9, and #107- 182 are for 9-11. Subcategories include-classics, animal stories, poetry, historical stories & fantasy stories. Like the guide for teen books, has many British authors, although better known. An oddity is David Almond's "Kit's Wilderness" for kids 9-11, when it's also listed in the guide for teens as 13+. The inclusion of poetry for each age group is great, though as a Canadian I wish Dennis Lee's "Alligator Pie" or "Jelly Belly" was here! Again glad to see a positive depiction of Roma(Gypsies) with "The Diddakoi", didn't know the term before(my grandfather was one). Also not glad to see Robert Cormier, this time with "The Chocolate War". I read it & it's sequel for school as well as "After the First Death" about a schoolbus of children taken hostage by terrorists. Very depressing, & as a survivor of school bullying too close to home. Give us some hope!
