Another light month for film viewing. Like May 2023, priority was given to TV series. Honestly, not enamored with the quality of films I've been seeing lately. The best TV shows I'm seeing are more compelling at the moment. Still, there were films worth celebrating:
Morvern Callar (2002) tells the story of a woman (the titular Morvern) who uses easy pleasures in a hopeless attempt to drown out the grief she feels about her boyfriend's passing. The glacial pacing utilized by director Lynne Ramsay works to the film's benefit in presenting a distant portrait of Morvern's self-defeating impulses.
Deep End (1970) is the highlight of the month for me. Mike gets a new job at a bathhouse, where he becomes obsessed with bath attendant Susan. By turns perverse and hilarious, director Jerzy Skolimowski's method reveals deep emotions within its characters. Jane Asher is remarkable as Susan.
Also finished parts 2 and 3 of The Hour of the Furnaces, which I started in May '23.
