Discovering Westerns Part 3: Revisionist Westerns

Part 3 in a series designed to be a crash course in discovering the western film genre. In this part we look at what is known as a revisionist western, where the genre's tried and true themes are subverted to create more atypical story lines where good and evil isn't all black and white, while Native Americans are also portrayed more favourably and women are given more prominent roles. Revisionist westerns can be similar to old school westerns (Part 1) in terms of maturity tone and certainly weren't a new thing even in the 1960s, but due to their greater prominence later in the western movie timeline many of them feature more mature storylines.
