The Great Westerns
A director, teacher, and film buff looks at the quintessential movie genre - The Western, and comes up with a personal list of the essential films. Some of them are classics, some are neglected gems, some are huge popular hits, and some are huge, overblown failures, but all of them are worth watching. The author has tried to be balanced, and has had to leave off some favorites. He has also deliberately excluded the B-Movie programmers of the 30s and 40s because there are literally hundreds of them; he has used the first Hopalong Cassidy film (Cassidy was the best of the B series) to represent all of them. He has also excluded singing cowboys. Finally, on any list of great Westerns, John Ford, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Budd Boetticher and Sam Peckinpah are going to dominate.
