Wow, I saw a *lot* of *great* movies in June: Ace in the Hole; Do the Right Thing; A Matter of Life and Death; Onibaba; Rebecca; Rififi; Sanjuro. But three stood out even above these:
Paths of Glory; The Quiet Earth; and Napoleon--the latter, a breathtaking masterpiece; third best silent I've seen, behind Greed, Metropolis, and tied w/Potemkin; it's this month's list image for a reason
I also saw a lot of racially-themed films this month. It started by accident, watching movies that I hadn't been aware included casual racism (Dam Busters, Tarzan). After a couple more, I decided to jump in with both feet. Went from Body and Soul (1925) through to Head of State (2003). I even watched Hallelujah and Song of the South, to see if they were as overtly racist as they were reported to be. I am neither sociologist, nor film historian, and this isn't the place for an essay, but it was definitely an interesting and educational experience.
