Umbrellas' Top 100 Films of the 1950s

Until a few years ago I had a feeling that the 50s were a bit of a dead decade for cinema, dominated by cheesy musicals (I'm generally not a big fan of musicals) and with the big studios increasingly playing it safe. While it's still far from my favourite decade on the average, the best films from this period are right up there with the greatest there have ever been, and I'd happily be stuck on a desert island with these top 100 picks (ranked in order of how much I like them, from Vertigo down). At the lower end it was difficult to decide what to put in and leave out - at no. 100 I slipped in Manbait, which might not really be that great a film, but seemed worth throwing in because it's less well known than most of the others and Diana Dors in her prime upends expectations about British cinema of that era.
