The English Teacher Lists Books That Have Been Ruined for Readers by English Teachers - Page 2

Our maverick English Teacher and contrarian considers the disturbing possibility that he and his colleagues have done as much harm as they have good in the ways that they have taught literature. Using "academically approved " lesson plans, discussions with fellow teachers, and his own years of experience for support, he has created a list of works that consistently have been taught poorly and misguidedly. He feels that by so doing, many teachers and educators have failed in their responsibility to their students, and have contributed to the steady decline in reading among young people today. Some of these works need to be approached in completely different ways,; others need to be removed from curricula entirely. (NOTE: Since he teaches at the secondary level, our compiler has focused on works usually assigned, either whole or in part, during high school.)
