The English Teacher Goes to the Movies Part 2: Shakespeare on Screen
Our maverick English Teacher and Theatre Director surveys the immensity Of film and television adaptations of the Bard, and selects 86 examples. To keep the list manageable, he set the following restrictions: 1) Silent versions were excluded because Shakespeare without the language seemed contradictory; 2) with s few notable exceptions, adaptations in a language other than English were excluded. This was done arbitrarily for size management, and the exceptions, like "Throne Of Blood", are historically significant films; and 3) the selections had to be shot digitally or on film and had to be theatrically released. Made for TV adaptations & taped recordings of stage performances were excluded. Ultimately, several noteworthy exceptions, like the Patrick Stewart "Macbeth" and the 2 "Hollow Crown" Series, were made; in these cases, the adaptations were conceived, budgeted, and shot like films, even though they were intended for TV. Free adaptations immediately follow their respective plays.
