From Rear Window (1954) and Murder on the Orient Express (1974) to Chinatown (1974) and Clue (1985), some of the most famous and renowned films ever made fall into the mystery genre. Thrillers, crime films, and the occasional action romps are all categories that can encompass the mystery subgenre. They commonly feature detectives or some other form of law enforcement attempting to solve a series of convoluted puzzles related to their respective cases and crime scenes. Even if you don't know the directors of these titles, you'll undoubtedly recognize the members of their respective casts. Common tropes and plot devices of storytelling like well-written red herrings, unexpected deus ex machina, and iconic plot twists were all at play in most of the films at hand.
