This is a list of surprising sequels. Sometimes, it is because they are better than the original, or they, successfully, go in a new direction.
These movies are not necessarily great. In general, sequels are a cheap and crappy cash-in, but these are not terrible. The actual quality ranges from okay to great.
I didn't include shared universe stuff unless it is a direct sequel. Also, a movie like Kill Bill is not included since it was one film split in two. Remakes (not reboots that acknowledge the original) are not included either.
