Classics That Were Good, Surprising And/Or Delightful

These are classics I enjoyed or even loved (A Town Like Alice). Lovable characters, interesting dilemmas, examples of creative writing for the times. Altho, IMO, even the ones I like tended to be too long and overly descriptive.
Books published before 1950, roughly.
Interested in seeing how people vote for these. Lots of ppl liked the ones I disliked. Go figure.
