The better known was Frank jnr, the actor renowned for a flamboyant personality, varied stage roles and enthusiastic depiction of villainous tyrants in 4 Hollywood blockbusters. However, his father, Frank snr, who died in 1936 when his son was 10, was a significant figure in the early days of Australian film, directing features such as "The Sentimental Bloke" and founding Efftee Studios. So in a sense, Frank jnr was Aussie film royalty given this connection to the beginnings of the oldest film industry in the world.
Frank jnr was in fact more respected as a stage actor as the greater part of his career was spent up to the 1990s on the Australian stage. A competent Shakespearean actor with an incredible resonant speaking voice was what brought him to the attention of Hollywood with his last film there in 1961.
