Special Birds of Kansas

The Sunflower State has some fantastic birding opportunities, owing to its centralized location in the United States. Forests at Weston Bend Bottoms, Marais des Cygnes Wildlife Area, and elsewhere in the eastern third of Kansas have birds typical of most of eastern North America like Wood Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, and various warblers. Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in the central part of the state has a large diversity of waterbirds throughout the year. In the southwestern corner, Cimarron National Grassland is the best place in the world to see the declining Lesser Prairie-Chicken, and has desert specialties like Scaled Quail, Ladder-backed Woodpecker and Curve-billed Thrasher at the northern edge of their range.
