Special Birds of Arkansas - Page 3

A wide variety of birds call Arkansas their home at some point in the year. The floodplains of the Mississippi River provide wintering habitat for numerous waterfowl, and a summer nesting ground for many wading birds. Specialties of southern swamplands and pinewoods, like the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker, can be seen here in Arkansas, but in the highlands of the Ozarks and Ouachita Mountains, one can also see birds typically associated with drier habitats farther west like Greater Roadrunner and Rufous-crowned Sparrow.
