Owls and Nightjars of North America

Most of the nocturnal birds found in North America north of Mexico are divided amongst three families: the Tyronidae (barn owls), Strigidae (true owls), and the Caprimulgidae (nightjars or goatsuckers). Some of these birds are widespread and relatively common, like the Great Horned Owl and the nighthawks, while others are secretive (such as the Boreal and Flammulated owls) and/or localized border specialties (such as the Whiskered Screech-Owl and the Buff-collared Nightjar). By their very nature, many of these birds are difficult to find, which makes it that much more satisfying when you do manage to find one. To birders and non-birders alike, I ask: how many have you seen?
