Nevada's Special Birds

Nevada may be the driest of the 50 states, but anywhere there's water, there's life, and an impressive diversity of birds can be found here. Various mountains, from the edges of the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe to Mount Charleston near Las Vegas, provide elevational habitat diversity in a state dominated by the Great Basin (northern two-thirds) and Mojave Deserts (southern third), while every one of the occasional wetlands serves as a magnet for scores of waterbirds at all times of year. Although not a native species, the Himalayan Snowcock, introduced to the remote Ruby Mountains in the state's northeast corner, is the only bird in Nevada that can't be seen anywhere else in the United States.
