Mississippi's Special Birds - Page 3

Mississippi is a great place to look for birds typical of the Deep South. Endangered specialties like the Red-cockaded Woodpecker (in pinewoods habitat) and Mississippi Sandhill Crane (a nonmigratory subspecies confined to the coast) can be seen, as can more common birds like nesting herons, ibises, plovers and terns along the coast, and warblers and other songbirds in more upland areas to the north, including the beautiful but localized Painted Bunting. Two beautiful kites, the Swallow-tailed and the namesake Mississippi Kite, also call The Magnolia State home, and the latter can be seen throughout in summer.
