Matthew Sheldon's Top 60 Films of the 1930s - Page 2

Besides this being the beginning of the so-called 'talkies', the 1930's was a curious decade for cinema. The Great Depression had affected the entire world, and Europe was dealing with the fallout of World War I. The financial hardships of the public and the uncertainty of the era resulted in widespread popularity of escapist entertainment. Swashbuckling adventures, Universal monster movies and the elaborate musicals from Busby Berkeley became highly successful of the period. My favorites were many of the pre-code films between 1930 and 1934. Before the Hays Code enforced censorship iconic actors like Cagney, Robinson and Muni crashed into the screen with some of the most violent and shocking gangster pictures, all the while young starlets like Barbara Stanwyck and Jean Harlow played strong determined characters who used sex to advance their social position in a male dominated world.
