…unless they a) have absolutely no regard for dark fantasy as a serious literary form; or b) they wouldn't know literature if it came up behind them and bit them. ( You would be surprised how many English teachers are in the second category.) Anyway, this retired English teacher majored in genre fiction as a specialty, and would happily put any of these on a reading list. Given the opportunity, he would also put Lovecraft, King, Straub, Kiernan, and Simmons on the list, but that would be pushing it.
