Schlocko's 10 Favorite Scary Works of Literary Fiction

You're an intellectual who reads literary fiction, not genre fluff like horror. No silly ghost stories for you, you just finished that Toni Morrison masterpiece about the spirit of a murdered child coming back to haunt her family. You don't waste time with dumb fantasies, you're too enthralled by Gabriel García Márquez's classic depiction of a fictional South American village where beauty queens ascend into heaven and children are born with tails. (Um . . spoiler alert.) Anyway . . if you've read any of the listed books, it was surely for the magnificent language and sophisticated philosophical inquiries, not the exciting story or creepy supernatural elements. Great articles in Playboy, too.
