Important Bird Areas: Northern Pacific Rain Forest

The sites listed here come from The American Bird Conservancy Guide to the 500 Most Important Bird Areas in the United States (2003). The Northern Pacific Rain Forest stretches from the western Gulf of Alaska down the coast and through the Cascade Mountains to northernmost California. This region is dominated by evergreen forests of hemlock and spruce, with Douglas-fir and redwood appearing to the south. Characteristic birds of the forest include Spotted Owl, Marbled Murrelet, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Red-breasted Sapsucker and Hermit Warbler; the coast and its associated estuaries and bays provide critical wintering and migration stopover habitat for a variety of waterfowl and shorebirds, while offshore islands host nesting seabird colonies of Ancient Murrelet, Rhinoceros Auklet, Tufted Puffin, and Western Gull.
