Important Bird Areas: Eastern Tallgrass Prairie

The sites listed here come from The American Bird Conservancy Guide to the 500 Most Important Bird Areas in the United States (2003). The Eastern Tallgrass Prairie stretches from eastern Nebraska and Kansas to western Ohio, and was formerly the tallest and most lush grassland in the Great Plains, with beech-maple forest at the eastern end and an oak savannah in between. Greater Prairie-Chickens, Upland Sandpipers, Henslow's Sparrows and Dickcissels are among the grassland nesting species, while Worm-eating Warbler can be found in the woodlands and Red-headed Woodpecker in the savannahs.
