Great Movies Based on Bad Books

People often say that, however well-made a movie adaptation is, the book must be better. Those who read the originals are often unhappy with lacking faithfulness or other violations to the source. There are times when a film works so well in its own way that it not only surpasses the book in fame but also in critical recognition. Maybe the overall theme is more suitable to the medium film, substantial weaknesses are corrected in the screenplay, or directors and actors bring "that certain something" to the screen.
