Films Umbrellas Saw in November 2019 - Page 2

Here are the films I watched in November, ranked in order of how much I liked them (most liked first). Of films I saw for the first time my favourite was Gilda, though The New World left a deep impression too. I was also wowed by Clara Bow, whose acting style seems incredibly modern compared with what I've come to expect from 1920s films. Apparently she never trained for theatre, which probably explains a lot - I'd recommend catching one of her films ('It' is the obvious choice) to understand why for a few years she was the brightest of Hollywood stars (before she retired aged 28!). At the other end of the scale, a later Godard film once again props up the table. I'd have thought so much more of him if he'd retired young too, say in about 1968...
