Stand-alone episodes had a great year, but the absolute best episodes of the year simply knew how to tell a great story.

Picking a best series list is difficult, but getting down to individual episodes? That's a whole other challenge. This year was filled with all kinds of excellent television—some hours showrunners decided to take risks and tell individual stories within their universe, while others decided to double down and offer up an episode that fully captured the essence of the series. With that being said, there was no shortage on good television this year, but if we have to choose, these are the ten best installments of some of television's finest programs.
