How do you decide on your favourite directors? One way is to look for those who consistently make films you like. So here's a list of 30 directors who've made at least 5 films high up on my all time list (cut off: 5 films by the director in my overall top 600 list). In each case I've listed the 5 films in my order of preference, and I'm also listing the directors in rough order of preference, favourite director first. For the record, the 30 directors in my rank order of preference are: 1. Peckinpah, 2. Leone, 3. Kubrick, 4. Hitchcock, 5. Lean, 6. Polanski, 7. Altman, 8. Pakula, 9. Welles, 10. Antonioni, 11.
