Having looked at some of the greatest films of each period of cinema, let's look at the filmmakers responsible for them. Of course, one was undeniably racist and it shows in the film that is considered his magnum opus, but let's try to examine his work as an artist and not as a person.
Anyway, these are twelve of the defining filmmakers from the beginnings of cinema to the 1950s. Each is represented by two of their films that I have seen. While some directors, like Stanley Kubrick, were making movies during the 50s, their careers didn't take off until the 60s. So I'll be saving them for the next list. Kurosawa, on the other hand, while he was still active in the 60s, he was already making movies in the 40s, and had released many of his greatest films (Rashomon, Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, Hidden Fortress) during the 50s. So he meets the criteria.
Enjoy!
