Children and young adult books are often challenged because people want to protect children from “inappropriate” sexual content or “offensive” language. In fact, the top three reasons cited for challenging materials as reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom are:
--the material was considered to be "sexually explicit"
--the material contained "offensive language"
--the materials was "unsuited to any age group"
Read over the list of challenged children's and young adult books. It's a large list (and by no means even close to including all restricted books). Have you read any of them? Click on the covers to track how many banned books you've read.
