An Appalling High School Reading List From 50 Years Ago

This is a combined reading list in English subjects from 1968-1973 in my typical suburban Boys Only High School. Or at least those I can remember having read. Can you work out which country we are in? BTW, the country is NOT England. So quite an appalling insult to my country's home-grown literature. I suspect RK2MAX & Sean Harding may find the list both bewildering and amusing (that's a clue). Update: My high school mate Eens and I have recalled some extra books that make the snub even worse. They are Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Animal Farm and the poetry of Robert Frost.BTW, I've put the answer in the Comments.
