65 English Language Films of the 1930s in Matthew Sheldon's Collection - Page 2

The 30's were rough around the edges. They were still trying to get the hang of sound when making many of their early 30's films. But near the end of the decade they began to find their note. My favorite genres of the 1930's were mostly during the darker pre-code days. For me Warner Bros was the studio I was drawn to the most, especially for their scandalous racy sex dramas starring Barbara Stanwyck and Jean Harlow. The violent gangster films with James Cagney were always excellent. The gritty social conscience films like I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang were always quite powerful. And the Universal monster films because of their subtle morbid themes with films like Freaks and Island of Lost Souls. When you dig deep enough, the 30's have a lot to offer! And Hollywood was only just getting started!
