Of the thousands of players in Major League Baseball history, only 28 have reached the 3,000 hit mark, and of those, only 5 reached 3,500 hits and only 2 reached 4,000.
With the retirement of Derek Jeter at the close of the last season, there are no active 3,000 + players in the game today. However, there are two active players players who are within shouting distance. Alex Rodriguez is three hits shy (and would be only the 4th player to reach 3,000 hits AND 500 home runs) and Ichiro Suzuki is 115 hits shy.
