This list features the top 100 films of the first century of Indian filmmaking. The list, created by IMDb's Indian Cinema Board*, is inspired in part by the AFI's top 100 list, which was completed a century after America began making films. These films come from a broad range of languages within India, and are rated by the following criteria (as listed in the Letterboxd list):
"1. Cultural/artistic impact on India and the world - most important
2. Critical acclaim in India and abroad - 2nd most important
3. Popularity/cult status - 3rd (and least) important"
*Completed shortly before the closure of the Indian Cinema Board
