10 Great Films Which Defy Genre

"It's as simple as this: genre has almost destroyed cinema. The audience is bored. It can predict the exhausted UCLA film-school formulae—acts, arcs and personal journeys—from the moment they start cranking. It's angry and insulted by being offered so much Jung-for-Beginners, courtesy of Joseph Campbell. It's now impossible to imagine a gangster picture, romantic comedy, biopic, war picture, goblin epic or detective thriller which could come anywhere near the vitality and reach of non-genre pictures like Amores Perros (Mexico 2000, dir. Alejandro González Iñárritu) or Talk to Her (Spain 2002, dir. Pedro Almódovar).
All great work is now outside genre."
—David Hare, in 10 Bad Dates with De Niro: A Book of Alternative Movie Lists (2007), edited by David T. Kelly
