Very rarely do remakes succeed in capturing the magic of the original film. This doesn't ever really stop Hollywood from trying. Every generation or so, another director takes a perfectly timeless movie, rips it apart, slaps it back together, and serves us the shoddy remake. While there are the occasional exceptions, oftentimes these films either tend to be total critical flops or stop raking in cash after the first week.
Unfortunately, nobody ever seems to learn and the tacky reboots and redos just keep coming. The next time you're considering a newer version of a classic, skip it and go back to the source.
I really recommend originals of all but especially The Vanishing or Oldboy which are two of the best suspense films I have ever seen. I'm sure we could all find more and I admit I am embarrassed I have seen so many of them. At least I stayed away from the Psycho remake.
