Wisconsin has an excellent diversity of birding opportunities. At Horicon Marsh, one can find the largest heronry in the state, over a dozen species of nesting ducks, and numerous other waterbirds. Crex Meadows in the northwest has more marshlands as well as prairie habitat for birds like Sharp-tailed Grouse. Along the Mississippi River in the southwest, at places like Wyalusing State Park, birds more typical of the South like Prothonotary and Kentucky Warblers can be seen. Finally, Nicolet National Forest in the northeast has boreal specialties like Spruce Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Gray, Jay and Boreal Chickadee.
