William Talman Filmography

William Talman rose to fame playing menacing movie villains, although he was best known for portraying District Attorney Hamilton Burger on the original "Perry Mason" TV show (opposite another frequent movie villain Raymond Burr). His most famous movie role was sadistic serial killer Emmett Myers in Ida Lupino's "The Hitch-Hiker" (1953; list image).
During WWII, Talman rose from being a private in the US Army to the rank of major before leaving the service. Talman was the first actor to be the subject of a successful mass letter-writing campaign to a TV network--he was reinstated to "Perry Mason" by CBS after being (briefly) fired. Talman was also the first actor to film an anti-smoking PSA, filmed while suffering from terminal cancer, and aired after his death.
