Plenty of these characters began as lesser characters but over the course of a show received such positive feedback from fans, that they were promoted to the main cast and got story-lines of their own. Others were part of the main cast, but ended up with more attention than the others. (Let's face it, the early Simpsons were all about Bart, but eventually Homer took over).
