Alfred Hitchcock said: "The length of a film should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder". And yeah, he wasn't wrong. But Roger Ebert also said: "No good movie is too long and no bad movie is short enough". There's a lot of reasons a movie might have an expansive runtime. Maybe it's meant to emphasize the movie's specatular and majestic scope, or to present a rich ensemble cast and a larger-than-life story, or to build a deeper meditation about our perception of life and time itself. And that's just to name you a few. Anyway, we shouldn't be afraid of a movie's runtime but we should learn to appreciate the time and investment a picture has to offer.
