The Sound and Sound/BFI List of the Greatest Movies (2012)

Since 1952, every ten years, Sight and Sound, a magazine published by the British Film Institute, polls movie critics and directors to assemble an authoritative list of the greatest movies made to date. The late Roger Ebert said that it is "by far the most respected of the countless polls of great movies--the only one most serious movie people take seriously."
The 1952 initial poll was led by Italian director Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves. From 1962 to 2002, the list was led by Orson Welles' first feature Citizen Kane; the 2012 list was headed by Hitchcock's Vertigo.
