The Manic Pixie Dream Girl (Part 1)

MPDG - is probably one of the the most used and misused terms to label a character. The term was inspired by Elizabethtown but the phenomena existed long before the name. So what's the definition of an actual MPDG? It is a female character with an outgoing personality, particular tastes in fashion or music. She's not like normal girls, she is undaunted, she never gives up and always in a good mood, never cares what people think, but most importantly she changes other characters' lives and challenges them to be better self. And that's what actually distinguishes the MPDG from a genuinely quirky person - she is not real, her only role is to motivate and cheer up the protagonist in order to help him grow. To put it simply, its just a bad character writing and thats it. And it is really important to differentiate between them and much more complex characters commonly mislabeled as MPDG (check Part 2).
