The Guardian: Famous for the Wrong Book

To quote The Guardian: "There's a big difference between an author's best-known work, and their best".
For each pair of works in the challenge, the 1st title is the author's best-known work (or one of their best-known works). The 2nd title is their best work, according to the article's author (John Self) and other contributors. In defiance of Self, the final pairing is a suggestion from some of my friends (I have read neither book).
Do you agree with the conclusions? Or, if you've only read one book from a pair, will you read its partner to decide for yourself?
