The Great Plays: A Stage Director's View - Page 3

After 40+ years in the theatre, and directing and acting at all levels from high school to Off-Broadway, I take a personal, idiosyncratic, and certainly NOT definitive look at plays that matter. These are plays that make the Live Theatre valid and necessary, and that are still worth mounting, seeing, hearing, and reading. I have restricted myself to plays; Musicals are their own form, and deserve their own list. The order after the first 10 is as the plays occurred to me, and should not be taken as a strict order of merit. The first 10 are what I consider to be the greatest of the great.
[2/7/23 Since compiling this list I've reconsidered 1-10. I now would put "Our Town" at no. 7 and "Long Day's Journey" at no. 11. I have come to realize that "Our Town" is the greatest American play yet written.]
